Anthropic Is Opening a Sydney Office and Australia Is Already in the Top 5 for Claude Usage
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI model, announced this week that it is opening a Sydney office. It will be the company's fourth in Asia Pacific, joining offices in Tokyo, Bengaluru, and Seoul. The expansion is a direct response to demand that was already there.
According to Anthropic's own Economic Index, Australia ranks 4th globally in Claude.ai usage relative to population. New Zealand sits at 8th. Those numbers are not the result of a marketing push. They reflect businesses and individuals in both countries independently finding Claude useful and building it into how they work. Anthropic is following the adoption curve, not leading it.
Anthropic already works with Australian organisations including Canva, Quantium, and CommBank. The Sydney office will focus on enterprise, startup, and research customers. Anthropic is also exploring local compute infrastructure through existing third-party partners to address the data residency requirements that Australian enterprises and government agencies increasingly need. The company's executive team visits Australia in late March to meet customers and policymakers, with some partnerships expected to be formalised during that trip.
This follows a pattern that is becoming familiar. Global AI companies are no longer treating Australia as a distant market. They are establishing local teams, local partnerships, and now exploring local infrastructure. For Australian businesses, this changes what is available to them. Localised support, reduced latency, and clearer compliance pathways for government and regulated industries are all becoming more accessible.
The announcement matters not just for what Anthropic is doing, but for what it signals about where Australia sits in the global AI picture. The demand was already here. The investment is following it.
