ChatGPT for Excel Is Now in Beta and Australian Businesses Should Take Note

OpenAI has released ChatGPT for Excel in beta, bringing its most advanced reasoning model directly into one of the most widely used business tools in Australia.

The add-in is powered by GPT-5.4 Thinking and operates inside Microsoft Excel workbooks rather than as a separate application. It can build, update, and analyse financial models without the user leaving Excel. Financial data integrations are included. The tool is currently available to subscribers on ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Edu plans.

What This Means for Australian Businesses

Excel is embedded in Australian business operations at every level. It underpins budgeting, financial modelling, reporting, forecasting, and operational planning across industries from professional services to construction to retail.

Until now, AI-assisted analysis meant copying data between tools, using external platforms, or learning new software entirely. ChatGPT for Excel changes that. The AI layer is now native to the workbook itself.

This is worth paying attention to for a few reasons.

First, it lowers the entry barrier for AI-assisted analysis significantly. Staff who already know Excel do not need to learn a new interface. The AI is where the work already happens.

Second, the quality of the underlying model matters here. GPT-5.4 Thinking is a reasoning-focused model, which means it is better suited to multi-step financial analysis than a standard language model. Building a financial projection, spotting formula inconsistencies, and summarising key trends are all within scope.

Third, for businesses already subscribed to ChatGPT Pro or Enterprise, there may be no additional cost to access this. That changes the ROI calculation considerably.

The Practical Question

If your business runs financial models, reporting, or planning in Excel, the question now is not whether to investigate this tool. It is how quickly you can get familiar with it and work out where it fits in your existing processes.

The businesses that move early on tools like this will have an advantage. Not because the technology is perfect, but because the learning compounds. Staff who understand how to direct AI tools within Excel will be meaningfully more productive than those who do not.

This is the thing to pay attention to right now.
