MYOB Launches AI Powered BAS Preparation for Australian Small Businesses

MYOB has launched Australia’s first AI powered BAS preparation tool, with a beta now live for sole traders using Solo by MYOB and MYOB Business Lite and Pro. A broader rollout is planned across 2026 for approximately 2.61 million GST registered small businesses.

The tool imports transactions from a business’s accounts, checks them against GST rules, reconciles account balances, flags any missing receipts, and fills in the BAS statement in real time. Before anything is lodged with the ATO, a human adviser reviews and signs off. That last step matters. The tool is designed to reduce the time and friction involved in BAS preparation, not to remove the accountant from the process.

Alongside the BAS tool, MYOB is rolling out AI Business Insights, which generates interactive charts and plain language commentary explaining patterns in a business’s financial data. The aim is to make the kind of analysis that previously required a bookkeeper or accountant to prepare available directly inside the software small business owners already use.

Why This Is Worth Paying Attention To

BAS preparation is one of the most consistently dreaded compliance tasks for Australian small businesses. It is quarterly, time consuming, and requires careful attention to GST categories, receipts, and reconciliation. For many sole traders and small operators, it is the kind of work that gets left to the last minute or handed to a bookkeeper specifically because the cognitive load is high.

What MYOB is doing here is not creating a new category of AI tool. It is embedding AI into the task people already know they need to do, in the software they already use. That is a meaningfully different approach from asking business owners to adopt a new platform or workflow.

The human sign off requirement before ATO lodgment is a deliberate and sensible design choice. It keeps the accountant or business owner accountable for the final submission while removing the tedious reconciliation and pre fill work that precedes it.

What It Means for Small Businesses

For the 2.61 million GST registered businesses in Australia, a tool that reduces BAS preparation time has a direct effect on how owners and their teams spend their hours. It is also a signal of where accounting software is heading. The businesses that understand what these tools do and do not do will be better placed to use them accurately and without unnecessary risk.

If you are using MYOB Business Lite or Pro, the beta is available now. If you are on other MYOB products, the broader rollout is expected progressively through 2026.
