9,238 Australian technology roles have been cut so far in 2026, and every redundancy has been publicly attributed to AI. The Australian tech sector now ranks second globally for job losses this year.
The names behind the numbers are familiar. WiseTech Global cut 2,000 roles, roughly a third of its global workforce. Atlassian cut 1,600 positions, including 480 in Australia. Commonwealth Bank cut more than 300. These are not startups making bets. These are established, profitable Australian businesses redirecting capital from people to AI infrastructure.
The breakdown of where cuts are landing tells its own story. AI adoption has been linked to entry level job losses at 63 per cent of firms, middle management cuts at 46 per cent, and senior management reductions at 27 per cent. The roles disappearing first are the ones where tasks follow predictable patterns. The roles next in line are the ones that coordinate those tasks.
Now the Australian Services Union has submitted to parliament that productivity gains from AI should be shared with workers. The proposal is a four-day work week and five weeks of annual leave. Whether or not that particular outcome eventuates, the underlying question it raises is one every business owner needs to be asking right now. If AI makes your team more productive, what changes for the people in that team?
The businesses getting this right are not treating it as a binary. They are asking a more useful question. What does your team look like in two years if you invest in their ability to work alongside AI, rather than restructure around it? That is a very different problem to solve. And it is the one worth spending time on.
AI readiness in Australia right now is not primarily a technology problem. It is a leadership problem. The tools are available. The question is whether business owners are building teams that can actually use them, and whether the people inside those businesses have been given any reason to trust the transition.
